Part 1

I... honestly don't have anything witty to say here.

Go crazy so long as you read the rules, and the contact post is open if you guys need me for anything.

Code for Images: (Note: You're going to need a sock account for this)

If you're going to post images on the meme, just remember to read the rules and we'll be golden.

UPDATE: Since the release of Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is still recent, there will be a rule placed on spoilers regarding these two games. In other words, if you wish to discuss or make any references to anything from PL vs PW, go ahead. However, you must warn for and mark your spoilers by using the code below.

Posts that fail to follow this rule will be deleted.

Guys, I just had a thought.

You know how Bansai used his influence to practically buy Yumihiko's grades and badge behind his back? Also, you know how Bansai is a corrupt as hell Prosecutorial Investigation Committee Head and former Chief Prosecutor who auctioned off evidence from past cases and all that fun stuff?

Wouldn't the fact that Bansai is a criminal in a position of power who forged his kid's grades and used his influence to allow him to become a prosecutor at seventeen make the public start to distrust teen lawyers when the Dark Age of the Law starts? Oh, and teen lawyer Yumihiko thanks daddy (in the public's viewpoint) by getting him thrown in jail.

Let's look at it in the eyes of the public: if this one teen who doesn't know shit about prosecuting can become a lawyer thanks to daddy dearest buying him his success, who's to say that all the other teen lawyers had the same happening to them? The whole incident with Bansai happened within the same year as Simon's conviction, so it definitely won't look good on Yumihiko's part.

Now let's look at Athena. She's a teen defense attorney from Europe with magic hearing that allows her to listen to the "true testimony of the heart" complete with a high-tech necklace that can read her thoughts and help her assess the witnesses true feelings! Though this is no fault of her own, I can't imagine the public seeing her to have any credibility whatsoever after what happened with Yumihiko.

IMO, you'd think the player would see at least one character muttering "whose coattail did she ride off of now" upon hearing she's an 18-year-old lawyer. You'd think you would see people on more than one occasion question her abilities as a lawyer in the Dark Age of the Law because she's a ridiculously young lawyer. In fact, that would have been interesting to see!

Except, we don't really get this. Sure, the Big Bad in the last case tries to cast doubt on Athena's abilities which works for maybe, like, a minute before the judge declares "MAGICAL SUPER HEARING PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS IS ACCEPTABLE AS A FORM OF EVIDENCE" "OKAY" and then everyone moves on, satisfied.

tl;dr: Athena should have received even less trust from the public as a teen lawyer than she already has in Dual Destinies thanks to the reveal with Yumihiko, which happened the same year the Dark Age of the Law began.

DD has a case of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants writing. It wasn't ever going to take its supposed dark age seriously, and I will bet you a million bucks everything returns to status quo next game.

Having the new lawyer actually work hard for their credibility (which the previous three do), and jump more hurdles than Means' bullying, would have done wonders for dissuading my thinking she gets it handed to her. Rode on Phoenix's coat tails is what the audience should have been screaming.

There were a few bumps along the way, but we’re pleased to announce the winners of the 2013 (2014?) Court-Records Sprite Cup!

First place: space coyote’s Inspector Cabanela!
sc takes his second Sprite Cup, and with it wins the GS5 Phoenix statue! Congratulations!

Second place: mercurialSK’s Prosecutor Justice!
mercurialSK’s bad-end-Apollo wins the silver and the GS5 3DS carrying case! Nice one!

Third place: Athena Cykes’ Trucy Gramarye!
While we’re guessing Athena Cykes is a pseudonym and the lines between Ace Attorney and reality haven’t blurred that much yet, Athena’s take on Trucy pulled bronze and the GS5 sticker set out of a hat!

Fourth place: Barbz’s Mona Arch!
Barbz’s Shakesperian butterfly thespian is the only totally original character to make the top five!

Fifth place: Lil’s Hipster Klavier!
Klavier may have fallen on hard times with this entry, but he’s still glimmerous enough to round out our top five!

And thanks to a generous staffie at Capcom-Unity, all five finalists will receive one of these foam Phoenix fingers*! We’ll be reaching out to you via the e-mail you submitted your entry with to collect shipping info.

And to everyone who participated, be that by submitting or voting: thank you very, very much! We had a great turnout this year with some really stellar entries, and we’ll be making all entries, including non-finalists, available for viewing on C-R in the near future. On a personal note, it was my first time managing a contest for C-R, and I’m hoping to apply the lessons learned in the process to help our upcoming OC Contest run a little smoother. (Oh yes, that’s still on its way!)

Congratulations once more to our winners!

I haven't played dual destinies yet so that's the limit of my scope, but I remember being really turned off by Kay's Little Thief machine in Ace Attorney Investigations.

Now while I don't think Kay herself is a Mary Sue, Little Thief certainly is. It's the size of a cellphone, and yet it's a hologram projector, advanced super computer, and probably tons of other shit as I haven't really played much farther than that because I was so put off from the game that I stopped soon after that point.

Anyway...yeah the introduction for that damn machine was just way too much and it went on for way too long. The level of technology felt way too out of place for the series. I didn't like the way it was constantly called a gadget by the characters when they should be flipping out at how advanced it was. And also I didn't like how everyone called it Little Thief, as if it were a character. I guess the game writer liked the idea of fancy device as a character so much that he did it again with Widget in Dual Destinies.

Plot Twist: Phoenix and Simon didn't cause the Dark Age of the Law.

It was Yumihiko. He got a driver's license and on his first day in court with his brand new car, he drove the it through the walls of all the courtrooms without injuring anyone somehow.

Nothing was the same again after that.

It's called the Dark Age of the Law because he took out the fusebox.

While I tend to be critical of the AAI team's writing, the way they handled Yumihiko and his character arc was one of their better moments imo. Probably because Yumihiko's story felt more personal to me in contrast to the wide-scale incidents the AAI spin-offs or DD introduced. The writing wasn't perfect, but I had sure had an easier time caring about what happened to Yumihiko than I did THE DARK AGE OF THE LAAAAAW or THE EVILLLL SMUGGLING RING.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 05:24 am (UTC)(link)

Also, according to C-R user GentlemanGamer:

Sorry, I know I JUST posted but just want to let ya'll know something; I applied the new patch to the original ROM file and renamed the file to my previously patched ROM, and my saves still work fine. That said, I found my save states (something different entirely) were corrupted and unusable, so BEFORE you make changes, if you primairly use save states (like me!) SAVE YOUR GAME PROPERLY FIRST! That is all.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
With the patch for the third case out, what are your guys' thoughts on it? Love it? Hate it? So-So?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
AAI2 is the only game where I would purposefully choose the wrong answers because I wanted to see how Yumihiko would react whenever he was in the room.

His reactions has never disappointed me so far.

"I felt that Phoenix's story had been told, and that the series should not continue", the writer, whose most recent work is the fantastic Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, explained to us. "Knowing when to end a story is very important and I wanted to avoid dragging it out and having it become a shadow of its former self."

Of course, his next appearance was at the stand rather than his usual bench in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, a move that Takumi was initially against: "Years later, when it was decided within Capcom that Ace Attorney 4 would go ahead, my position was that we should change the main character and tell a new story. I didn't plan to have Phoenix in the game, but my colleagues said they wanted him to appear in some form, which is why he ended up being the accused in the first case in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney."

ONM interviewed Takumi in their latest issue (v. 106)! Full article & issue can be purchased on ONM's site!

In other words, Takumi makes it clear that he doesn't like the direction the AAI is going with the series, especially if they're going to make Phoenix a main character again.

I figured from the last interview where he said he had "mixed feelings" on the AAI team taking over AA.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure it takes like three or four years of post-undergraduate law school to be anywhere near eligible to take the bar exam, so most lawyers don't start their exciting and dramatic courtroom careers until their mid-to-late-twenties at the earliest. Unfortunately, humans pupate from their Hot Anime Hunk/Babe forms well before then and must move on to be Wizened Mentor Figures by their early thirties, so it's not surprising that the Ace Attorney series has taken some liberties. Or, whatever, everyone goes to lawyer highschool because of course they do.

hey, I just realized something! you know how the GS5 art book says Apollo is 165 cm (5'5")? well, 17-year-old Yumihiko is canonically 173 cm (5'7"), making him taller than 23-year-old Apollo. if Yumihiko ever appears again in GS6 or some other game that takes place after the time-skip, he's probably going to be taller than 5'7".

sad that you can't outgrow a teenage boy, Apollo. so sad.

i can't judge on lawyering skillz but edgeworth is the most dynamic complex-written character in the entire franchise lbr

klavier is the opposite end of the spectrum (excluding one-note prosecutors like the paynes and manfred von karma)

although it's not a huge spectrum and more characters are towards klavier's side than not

Set in the Meiji period of Japan, it follows Naruhodou Ryuunosuke, who is described as Phoenix’s ‘forefather’. Ryuunosuke is described as having a burning sense of justice and being danger-prone - just like Nick. Things don’t change after a century!

Do you think the Fey family will appear in some capacity (Like, Ami Fey) or will Takumi avoid bringing in any other families? For the localization (if there is one) will all characters be retconned as being of Japanese descent or foreigners? I mean, if it's set in the Meiji era, it'll be a little hard to Japanifornia it...

Oh god, "ancestor who is uncannily identical to descendant" is my least favorite trope. I know it's Takumi, but...I just do not have high hopes for this. Especially since, lol, if Capcom USA wasn't willing to replace a few japanese-culture-related questions to make the quiz DLC localizable*, there is almost no fucking way they're going to bother localizing this.

*you know, like the Layton franchise does for every single game

athena is the worst character in this series, hands down

every player i've come across who does her is weirdly creepily attached to her and plays up every mary sue-esque quality she has (which is admittedly all of her qualities)

i am so fucking sick of this special snowflake

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
tbh i really don't see how she's much worse than any other assistant girl (even tho i guess she technically isn't one? er) or post-original-trilogy lawyer

the series has been going on an uphill exponential climb of fighting manga absurdity for a while now
